Lai Haraoba Folk Dance

Lai Haraoba Manipur Folk Dance

Lai Haraoba is one of the most ancient and culturally rich folk dances of Manipur, deeply rooted in the spiritual life of the Meitei community. The term Lai Haraoba literally means “the merrymaking of the gods,” and the dance is performed as a sacred ritual to please local deities, known as Umang Lai. More than just a dance form, Lai Haraoba represents the origin of the universe, human life, and the harmonious relationship between nature and mankind.

This traditional folk dance is usually performed by priestesses called Maibis, who use graceful hand movements, symbolic gestures, and slow rhythmic steps to narrate mythological stories. Each movement in Lai Haraoba has a deep meaning, often depicting creation, daily human activities, and the cycle of life. The dance is accompanied by traditional music, including the pena (a string instrument) and ritual songs that enhance its spiritual atmosphere.

Lai Haraoba is also an important medium for preserving Manipuri folklore, customs, and indigenous knowledge. Performed during specific festivals and ceremonies, it strengthens community bonds and keeps ancestral traditions alive. Today, Lai Haraoba folk dance continues to be a powerful symbol of Manipur’s cultural identity and intangible heritage, admired by scholars and art lovers alike.
