Cham is the masked and costumed dance of Ladakh's Buddhist monasteries, performed by monks wearing masks and robes of meditative and protective deities. The masked dances of Ladakh are referred to collectively as chams and are part of the tantric vajrayana tradition — the dancers circle a central pole to the sound of drums, cymbals and long wind instruments, and the performance is held to bestow good health, subjugate disease and conquer evil spirits. Ladakh's best-known chams are performed at the Hemis festival, which commemorates the birth of Guru Padmasambhava.
