About Bharatanatyam

The Sacred Art of Classical Indian Dance

History and Origin

Bharatanatyam, one of India's eight classical dance forms, originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu over 2000 years ago. This ancient art form was traditionally performed by Devadasis (temple dancers) as a spiritual offering to the deities. The dance derives its name from 'Bharata' - combining Bhava (expression), Raga (melody), Tala (rhythm), and Natya (drama).

The dance form was systematized and revitalized in the 20th century, transforming from a temple ritual to a respected stage performance that maintains its spiritual essence while celebrating artistic excellence.

Spiritual and Expressive Elements

Bharatanatyam is characterized by its precise geometrical movements, expressive hand gestures (mudras), facial expressions (abhinaya), and rhythmic footwork. The dance encompasses three primary elements:

  • Nritta: Pure dance movements focusing on rhythm and technique
  • Nritya: Expressive dance combining movements with emotions
  • Natya: Dramatic aspect including storytelling and character portrayal

Connection with Hindu Festivals

Bharatanatyam has an intrinsic connection with Hindu festivals and mythology. During Navratri, this classical dance form becomes a powerful medium to honor the Divine Feminine through the nine forms of Goddess Durga.

Each day of Navratri corresponds to a specific aspect of the goddess, and Bharatanatyam dancers interpret these divine qualities through carefully choreographed sequences that combine devotional fervor with artistic mastery.

The dance becomes a form of worship, where the dancer embodies the divine energy, creating a spiritual experience for both the performer and the audience.
